Tales Of A Fourth Generation Textile Executive: A Blog About Blogs (Blogoblog)

Happy Summer Studioe fans and followers!

In anticipation of my school house speaking engagements at the Shipshewana Show this week, I have been scouring my past blogs (blogsweep) for inspiration (blogspiration) and ideas (blogcepts).  In doing so, I have learned a couple of things (blogifacts) and have made up some new blog words (bloginology) to describe these concepts.

 Blog Letters

Long blogs stink.  I pledge to keep my blogs shorter (microblogging) as no one wants to read a long and boring blog (blogasleep).  Going forward, long blogs will be separated into more bite sized pieces (blogobites) so as to avoid the fear of blog disease (bloganoia).

I crack myself up which is funny in itself.  While reading my past blogs in bed (blogsomnia), I have broken out in hysterics (blogsteria), so much so that my wife is wondering what in the blog is wrong with me.  I guess I am my own best audience which is kind of funny because I probably am the only one that reads these blogs anyway.  I hope other people are laughing too as laughing is healthy for you, just like quilting.

More photos.  Blogs are so boring without more pictures.  Therefore, going forward, I promise to have more photos (blogcandy).  Ironically, I can’t think of any good photos to go with this blog, but so blog it.

This is what I learned from my bloganalysis.  Please let me know if you have some bloggestions as I always love to hear from my blogees.

Blogging off!

Tales Of A Fourth Generation Textile Executive: New Solids Of Choice

Hi All,

Over the next couple of weeks I have some travelling to do as you probably know since nothing in my life is a secret since I started writing this blog.  So I am writing a short one this week for better or for worse.  I hate to keep harping on the subject of the Peppered Cottons, but I can’t help myself.  Ironically, we don’t want to keep harping on this subject for the Studioe Quilt Market Schoolhouses anymore either because it is getting a little stale.  So we are brainstorming some new ideas….big stitch, small stitch, slow stitch, fast stitch, tall stitch, short stitch, fat stitch, skinny stitch.  What to do, what to do?

Peppered Cottons

So back to the matter at hand….solids of choice.  Every couple of weeks, Pepper Cory emails me all the links that she finds online relating to her Peppered Cotton Fabrics.  I guess that is like googling yourself.  Anyway, I have noticed a trend from a lot of the articles, blogs and comments about the Peppered Cottons.  Many people keep saying that the Peppered Cottons are their “new solids of choice.”   Did you hear what I said?  Their “new solids of choice.”  There is a god.   Ironically, I keep telling my sales reps the same thing.  It is just a matter of time before the whole world embraces the love that the Peppered Cottons emanate.  The hand is like butter and the colors are rich.  There have been rave reviews so far.  You too should feel the love by stocking these goods in your shop, using them on your next project or just hoarding them in your stash.  You won’t regret it.  Take it from me, the schmata salesman from New York!

Have a great day!

Tales Of A Fourth Generation Textile Executive: Time Flies, Let’s Take A Step Back And Take A Deep Breath. Can You Feel It?

Life is flying by at a million miles per hour.  Do you feel the same way?  One day mushes in to the next and all of a sudden, here I am a 41 year old father with 2 young children.  The truth is that I still feel like I am in my 20’s and just can’t figure out where all the time went….elementary school, middle school, high school, college, law school, and several jobs are all faded memories.  Now, another Summer is more or less upon us, and the milestones are starting for my own children.

Just last week, I had the most special opportunity.  I got to see my kids graduate…..from nursery school and the 2 year old program.  Not exactly the biggest milestones for the kids, but for me it was nothing short of an emotional roller coaster.  Take a walk down memory lane.  Imagine yourself at your child’s school, sitting on the benches, waiting for your little one to walk across the stage to receive his/her diploma.  The pride and joy of this is overwhelming, but it isn’t easy to hold back the tears.  Believe it or not, I am tearing as I write this.  I am such a wuss.  Anyway, now that I have set the stage, so to say, imagine how I felt, and remember how you felt, when the kids crossed the stage.  Please watch this short video and put yourself in my shoes for a moment.  Can you feel that?  I sure can and it makes me so happy like a drug from the gods.

GRADUATION DAY

Now that we got past that, I would like to make my point.  The point being that life does fly by so fast.  As such, we all need to take a step back and smell the roses, kiss/hug a loved one, call an old friend, apologize to someone you hurt, turn your cell phones/pages, etc. off for a day.  Or, how about this?   Go find an old quilt and hang it up on the wall.  Stare at it for a while and just take it in.  Remember what was going through your mind when you made the quilt.  What was going on in your life at that time?   What fabric line was it from?  It better be Studioe E! Take it all in, breath and enjoy.  Repeat, repeat, repeat until complete elation.  Try it, you will be surprised.  Have a great day and an awesome Summer.

Signing Off,

Tales Of A Fourth Generation Textile Executive: Anyone Going To The Shipshewana Quilt Festival?

YES!  Your’s truly is attending the Shipshewana Quilt Festival and I am excited.

Here is the plan:

June 25 Morning–New York-Detroit-South Bend.

I arrive in South Bend in the afternoon and I immediately have a date to go see Erica & Cathy of Erica’s Craft & Sewing Center at 1320 North Ironwood Drive.  I am looking forward to seeing what Erica’s shop looks like and can’t wait to see all the Studioe fabrics flying out the door.  I will make sure to take photos to show you in a follow up blog.  I am going to dazzle the ladies, as I always do, with the the new July releases for both Studioe and Henry Glass, but that is not the exciting part.

The exciting part is that the ladies and I have a date with Rocco.  No, Rocco is not a hairdresser!  No, Rocco is not a personal trainer!  No, Rocco is not a fabric pimp! Rocco is the master of South Bend’s finest pizza.

We are going to have to see how that compares to New York style pizza. Wishing you much luck Rocco!  I am planning to leave Rocco’s with a full stomach and then heading over to my hotel in Shipshewana for a night of tossing and turning as my nerves get the best of me before my big Shipshewana debut.

Four score and several quilt markets ago, I spoke with Andre from Yoder’s.  We discussed the Shipshewana show as well as my guest speaking appearance at the Jackson Hole Quilt Guild Evening Social several months prior.  Andre was very intrigued about what took place in Jackson Hole (Recall The Jackson Hole-E Cow Blog).  Long story short, the Yoder’s invited me to provide 7, 30 minute schoolhouses at the Shipshewana Quilt Festival. They will start at 10 am and go until 2:30 pm or so on June 26 because I have to run out and catch a flight home at 5 pm.  So you might be wondering, what am i going to talk about?

Here are the 3 different formats:

1.  I will discuss the quality, construction and printing of the different fabrics the Jaftex companies offer.  I will have samples for show and tell.  And, of course, I will have free giveaways.

2.  I will discuss how the chain fabrics differ from the mom and pop quilt shop fabrics. In particular, I will discuss A.E. Nathan (more of a chain supplier) vs. Studioe & Henry Glass (quilt shop only suppliers).  I will have samples for show and tell.  Yes, I will have free giveaways here too.

3.  I will discuss the many facets of running both Studioe & Henry Glass as well as what it is like to be the 4th generation of a family business and some history about the nearly 85 year-old company.  Yes, I will have free giveaways here too.

Aside from offering free prizes at all the schoolhouses, I will take questions and I hope to be able to provide some sneak peaks of future Studioe & Henry Glass lines.

June 26 Evening–South Bend-Detroit-New York

If you have any plans to attend the show, please email me at scott@jaftex.com and we can definitely try to meet up…or at the least you can come see me speak at schoolhouse.

Have a great day!
